What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is long-term swelling caused by a buildup of lymph fluid, often in the arms or legs, after surgery, cancer treatment, or injury. When fluid collects and tissues stay swollen, the skin can become fragile making it harder for wounds to heal and easier for infections to develop.

Why Swelling Matters for Wounds?

Extra fluid slows oxygen and nutrients from reaching the wound. Tight, swollen skin is more likely to crack, leak, or break down. Lymphedema increases the risk of cellulitis and other serious infections. Good news: Managing lymphedema can improve comfort, protect your skin, and support better wound healing.

How Lymphedema Therapy Can Help

Neil, our lymphedema trained therapist uses: Manual lymphatic drainage (gentle, specialized massage to move fluid). Compression wraps and garments to control swelling and support healing. Therapeutic exercises (movement and deep breathing) to improve lymph flow and mobility. Skin and wound care education to protect your skin and lower infection risk.
